A world-class Jesuit education through
Saint Louis University.
Men and Women for Others
Saint Louis University is a Jesuit university located in the heart of St. Louis. Being affiliated with a Jesuit institution allows the Billiken Teacher Corps to form not just top-tier educators but men and women who live their lives for others. The graduate coursework that Billiken teachers complete prepares them for the diversity of circumstances that they may experience in their schools. Coursework that includes subjects like Foundations of Urban Education, Foundations of Catholic Education and Multi-Cultural Issues ensures that Billiken teachers receive an education that incorporates all facets of teaching. Master of Arts in Teaching Billiken Teacher Corps fellows complete 37.5 hours of graduate work through the School of Education at St. Louis University in order to receive a Master of Arts in Teaching degree and alternative certification. Most coursework is completed during the summer prior to the first and second years of teaching. Teachers take 9 hours of coursework each summer that is designed to provide the appropriate support that teachers will need during the school year. The rest of the graduate coursework is completed during the fall and spring semesters. During the school year, Billiken Teacher Corps fellows attend class once a week and complete coursework outside of class by participating in a practicum experience. Full Tuition Remission Billiken Teacher Corps fellows receive full tuition remission upon signing their contract with their school and the School of Education. Most school fees are covered in their assistance package. Billiken fellows also receive a stipend and optional health insurance as part of a Graduate Assistantship to help cover living costs. University Supervisors During the school year, Saint Louis University assigns a University Supervisor to the teacher who acts as an observer and gives the teacher necessary feedback so that they can make appropriate goals and work towards certification. A University Supervisor may connect Billiken teachers to different resources, make suggestions for different lessons or routines, provide materials for lessons, and support the growth of the teacher into a master educator. Instructional Coaching Billiken Teacher Corps fellows receive instructional coaching bi-weekly from experts trained in urban education. Professional Licensure The spring of the second year includes completing the necessary tasks to obtain Initial Professional Certification from the Missouri Department of Education. Teachers receive guidance and support through experienced faculty who are familiar with the certification process. Summer Seminars While coursework during the summer is increased, the decreased teaching responsibilities affords the opportunity for specialized informational seminars. These seminars cover topics including: how to live in community, how to be healthy while teaching, how to teach in diverse school environments, panels from educators who did similar programs, and more. These seminars are a unique opportunity to learn about aspects of teaching and living in community that might not be covered elsewhere. |
